Cars in German Town Discovered Marked with Nazi Symbols in Human Blood, Police Confirm

Incident location Affected vehicle Area Police
Police reported they were alerted by a resident who noticed a car in Hanau smeared with reddish substance

Roughly 50 cars have been covered with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.

Cars, building surfaces and postal boxes were marked, in some cases with swastikas, they reported in a release.

Officers report they were alerted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a resident discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored substance.

The substance had been placed in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they added.

Officers then found multiple other smeared cars and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.

These symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations outlawing the public display of Nazi-era symbols.

Officials state early analysis suggest the substance was likely human blood.

"At present there remains no clue as to its origin; officials are presently not cognizant of any physical harm in relation with the occurrence," they stated.

Municipal representatives stated they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have requested to the residents for tips.

A senior representative said the incident left him without words and had to be solved rapidly.

"This event affects the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the far-right terrorist attack half a decade ago," he stated on social media, recalling the killing of nine victims by a assailant targeting residents of foreign heritage in February 2020.
