The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
This row threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
