Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The former head of state was found guilty of orchestrating a military coup in the ninth month and given more than over two decades in incarceration, but he remained under house arrest pending legal challenges.

Top Judicial Official the presiding justice said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after fresh information emerged.

This encompassed attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the arrest, the judge said intelligence from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His son, his son Flávio, who holds office as a legislator, called for a meeting of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your couch? I call on you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so followers could "pray for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the magistrate's decision was the chance of Bolsonaro's "relocation to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of planning to ask for protection through a consular facility", a declaration said.

The court filing emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, the capital city, is positioned around 13km from his dwelling.

International Reactions

Bolsonaro's legal woes have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative American leader Trump, prompting him to implement a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.

Bolsonaro is being held in a national police facility in the capital and will experience a detention review on the following day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to authorize him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also requested that he be allowed to leave his home for medical care, saying he required frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other ailments.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was convicted of heading a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plan which included plans to kill his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was stopped because it didn't receive the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. The current president was took office without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, numerous his backers attacked and damaged government buildings in the capital, the capital city.

The security forces stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been encouraged by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, reestablish control and return him to office.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from seeking elected position until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 presidential election.
