In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to significant loss of life.
"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The September revolt was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic political corruption.
Terms of the New Electoral Agreement
According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the nation's older political leadership. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Political Consultations Underway
In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of major political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
